Crops and wildlife hit hard by deluge

Sept 18, 2012: The recent appalling weather has had a major impact on crops and wildlife.

Exceptionally heavy rain has led to vegetables being ruined and crop shortages. Extreme weather has forced farmers to house livestock indoors, putting pressure on feed and bedding stocks which has in turn pushed prices up. The Home-Grown Crops Association reported great concern over crops and uncertainty in the market.
The National Trust also reports that the sustained rain has also been having a devastating impact on wildlife, with birds, bats, butterflies and flowers all affected.
Britain’s drought and hosepipe ban was finally declared over on July 9 after more than two months’ worth of rain fell in 24 hours causing devastating floods.
